Job Overview:
The Program Director is responsible for overseeing NPAT's contracts to
conduct county wide searches for tallgrass prairie remnants,
developing and executing management plans for NPAT properties,
conducting biannual monitoring of prairie conservation easements,
managing databases and volunteers, advising and working with easement
grantors regarding management of their prairies, contacting prairie
owners on behalf of NPAT, and providing technical assistance to the
Executive Director in the execution of NPAT's goals and policies as set
by the Board of Directors.
Description of Duties:
Under supervision by the Executive Director (ED), the Program Director:
- Finds qualified prairie survey contractors for NPAT's County by County Tallgrass Surveys, and coordinates the Survey contracts, keeping those activities on schedule while overseeing quality control.
- Coordinates NPAT's land management activities, including overseeing all land management, wildlife management, and agricultural activities on NPAT holdings
- Recruits/supervises volunteers
- Ensures NPAT compliance with federal contracts on NPAT properties
- Coordinates with board and volunteers the bi-annual monitoring of NPAT prairie conservation easements, using established protocols
- Assists easement grantors as needed and reasonable to meet easement requirements
- Assists ED in communicating with potential easement grantors
- Coordinates all NPAT land protection programs including writing management plans and implementing them
- Provides conservation assistance to private landowners
- Assists the ED, as needed, in negotiating agricultural and hunting leases and conservation easements.
- Assists with fundraising, especially grants requiring technical information
- Works with the ED to facilitate community partnerships and relationships with diverse stakeholders including state and federal wildlife agencies, local officials, area communities, landowners, conservation organizations, real estate developers, hunting organizations, and others
- Travels extensively within Texas as needed
- In the conduct of all these duties, maintain
positive relationships and open communications with the Board, as well
as the confidentially of all dealings.
Qualifications:
- A passion for conservation, and experience in the field of conservation or ecological restoration
- Knowledge of native grasslands, grassland ecology, native plants and plant communities, grassland birds, prairie invertebrates, and other prairie wildlife
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proven ability to conceive, plan and implement management and restoration programs
- Ability to connect with people and build relationships with prairie landowners, donors, members and volunteers
- Experience in leading and managing individuals and teams as well as ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Willing and able to travel throughout Texas, most commonly within the tallgrass prairie regions (including Ft. Worth, Dallas, Paris, Waco, Austin, Houston, San Antonio) and to walk or travel over rough terrain
- Willing and able to work a flexible schedule which frequently includes weekends and evenings
- Ability to work online, via email, web, phone, and in-person with the board, landowners, and members
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, and ArcMap
- GIS and mapping experience
- Land trust experience desirable
